To further boost performance, Honda says the body and wheels have been redesigned. In a review of the 2021 Type R, we found the transmission to be one of the best in its class, and Honda claims it’s now even better: A lighter flywheel and revised rev-match system improve cornering stability, while a high-rigidity shift lever offers more precise gear changes.

The engine is mated with a six-speed manual transmission, which returns as the hatchback’s only option. The company says improvements come by way of a redesigned turbocharger, higher air-intake flow rate and more efficient exhaust, which makes for the Honda brand’s most powerful production vehicle ever sold stateside. Performance upgrades for the Type R include a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that now makes 315 horsepower and 310 pounds-feet of torque (up from 306 hp and 300 pounds-feet in the previous model). The CTR's contact patch is now notably wider thanks to its new 265/30 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires. Don't worry, though Honda only downsizes the wheel diameter. Mercifully, a smaller set of lightweight 19-inch rollers with thicker sidewalls is now standard. The last one rode on 20-inch rims with 245/30 Continental SportContact 6 summer rubber that had pancake-thin sidewalls. R-eturn of the SidewallĮasily overlooked, but hugely important, is the R-rated Civic's new wheel-and-tire combination. The side sills are another unique touch, and in the back is a black diffuser with the Type R's trademark triple-tip, center-exit exhaust. Honda also gives it wider rear doors that you won't find on the regular hatch. It’s still only offered as a hatchback-per tradition-and has flared fenders that distinguish it from lesser Civics. Like the outgoing version, the new Civic Type R has some unique bodywork.
